Antivirus creator John McAfee spends his life in his cell in Spain
John McAfee, an American businessman and creator of one of the most famous anti-virus software, was found dead in a cell in a prison in the Spanish city of Barcelona. It was just hours after a Spanish court approved his deportation to the United States for trial in the tax evasion case, according to the BBC.
Catalonia’s Justice Ministry said prison doctors tried to help him but did not succeed, and said in a statement that « everything indicates » john McAfee’s suicide.
McAfee was behind the release of the first software on the market to combat computer viruses and helped launch a multi-billion dollar industry, before moving its ownership of Intel in a deal worth more than $7.6 billion.
McAfee was arrested in Spain in October 2020 and charged with failing to commit to paying tax revenues over a four-year period, despite earning millions in consulting work, participating in lectures, cryptocurrencies and selling his life story writing rights.
The U.S. Department of Justice accused John McAfee of tax evasion by transferring his income to other bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts under other names, and of hiding property, including a yacht and real estate, behind other people’s names.
On Wednesday morning, the Spanish court agreed to deport him to the United States to face the charges against him.
According to the BBC, Elpais reported on its website that McAfee had always claimed to be the victim of a plot to undermine him, but, according to the newspaper, he had not provided « clear evidence » that he was being tried for political or ideological reasons.
John McAfee, who was born in Gloucestershire, Uk, came to the fore when he founded his company and launched McAfee Virus in the 1980s.
Although he is a leader in computer security, McAfee has previously admitted to the BBC that he did not use his or any other protection programme on his devices.
Speaking to BBC reporter Leo Killion in 2013, McAfee said, « I always protect myself by constantly changing my IP address, not inserting my name into any device I use, and not visiting websites that may be a source of the virus, » adding, « Like porn sites. »
McAfee made offers to become libertarian party’s candidate in the 2016 and 2020 U.S. presidential elections but failed. In 2019, he expressed his disdain for taxes, tweeting that he had not filed tax returns for eight years because « taxes are illegal » and in the same year he was briefly detained within the Dominican Republic for allegedly bringing weapons into the country.
